“In Praise of German Jews” discusses the contributions of this remarkable community to the modern world (widely acknowledged) and also to modern Jewry (less widely acknowledged).  Contemporary American Jews “know” two things about German Jewry: One, they were more German than Jewish. Two, they should have seen disaster coming. Unfortunately, both of these “facts” are at best half-truths, and do a great disservice to the community that gave us Marx, Freud and Einstein… and also Martin Buber, Franz Rosenzweig and Leo Baeck. Research on the Holocaust often focuses on the destruction of Eastern European Jewry – the world of our fathers. But the Nazis destroyed a second, distinct Jewish civilization and that too deserves commemoration.
